  HUMAN SACRIFICE

he notion of individual sacrifice is universal and has been practiced in many different forms. Urban Mesoamerican civilizations believed that human sacrifice was necessary to assure the continued existence of the world. According to Mesoamerican beliefs, the gods willingly sacrificed themselves to create human life. In return, humans were expected to offer sacrifices to the gods. The hearts of sacrificed victims were offered as sustenance to the Sun God by several cultures. Death by sacrifice was considered an honor that guaranteed rebirth in the blissful realm of the gods.
